Then Jesus told them, “Then I won't tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”

2and asked him, “Tell us: By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?”Acts 4:7; 7:27

3He answered them, “I, too, will ask you a question.
Lit. a word
Tell me:
4Was John's authority to baptize
Lit. John's baptism
from heaven or from humans?”

5They discussed this among themselves, saying, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Then why didn't you believe him?’ 6But if we say, ‘From humans,’ all the people will stone us to death, for they are convinced that John was a prophet.”Matt 14:5; 21:26; Luke 7:29 7So they answered that they didn't know where it was from.

8Then Jesus told them, “Then I won't tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”
